Global Payroll Week 2020 Provides Education, Recognition

By Brandy Gaskins

The Global Payroll Management Institute (GPMI) celebrated the third annual Global Payroll Week (GPW) 27 April-1 May. The successful, weeklong event was dedicated to increasing global payroll professionals’ skill levels through multiple education, training, and networking opportunities. The week recognized payroll professionals around the world for their essential efforts to pay employees accurately and on time, every time.

A Week of Educational Content

Education is a cornerstone mission of the annual GPW event, and this year’s focused on providing easy access to global payroll education and resources. During the week, the global payroll community had the opportunity to attend two complimentary educational webinars hosted by the GPMI. More than 1,000 individuals registered to attend a presentation on “Trends in ‘Next Generation’ Technology” and a panel discussion with GPW sponsors on “Navigating Through the Challenges of Global Payroll: A Panel Discussion.” Both GPW webinars are currently available on demand, and all attendees are eligible to earn 1 recertification credit hour (RCH) per webinar.

In addition to complimentary webinars, GPMI published and shared new content for the global payroll community. Items included the release of a new GPMI white paper on the Multiple Roles of a Global Payroll Outsourcing Partner, mini email lessons throughout the week that enabled recipients to take a deep dive into topics that are top of mind for today’s global payroll leaders, and the launch of the 13th edition of the Guide to Global Payroll Management eBook, sponsored by Workday.

Exclusive Industry Insight

GPMI once again hosted the “Getting the World Paid” survey as part of its GPW celebration. The annual survey is an important tool to gauge industry trends in the rapidly evolving global payroll landscape. More than 630 global payroll professionals from countries around the world participated in the survey in the months leading up to GPW. Their responses revealed insights on topics such as technology, standardization, service providers, and data accuracy.

Full results from the survey were published on the GPMI website during GPW, and select results were also used to create a series of infographics for global payroll professionals to share with their online communities.

Three survey participants were randomly selected to receive a virtual education voucher from the GPMI as a thank you for sharing their feedback. Those recipients were:

  • Shannon Boyer, CPP, Payroll Manager of ServiceMax, Inc.
  • Tristann Graves, CPP, Global Payroll and Equity Manager of Shrodinger
  • Colin Smith, Global Payroll Manager for LogMeIn

Recognition for Global Payroll Professionals

New for this year’s GPW celebration, GPMI launched its inaugural Global Payroll Titan award. The Global Payroll Titan award was created to celebrate, empower, and recognize the outstanding professionals responsible for processing multi-country payrolls. Nominations opened on 13 February, with GPMI receiving 62 nominations. All eligible nominees then moved forward to a public “People’s Choice” online voting in April, where more than 7,200 votes were cast for the nominees participants felt best represented a Global Payroll Titan. Each nomination was then reviewed by a panel of global payroll professionals, and one nominee emerged as the clear winner.

On the final day of GPW, Sharon Tayfield, Global Payroll Operations Director for BDO LLP UK, was revealed as the 2020 Global Payroll Titan. Tayfield has more than 25 years of experience and was nominated by a colleague for her dedication to the global payroll industry and her expansive knowledge of global compliance and legislation.

Social Media Impact

Social media was an extremely popular way for the international payroll community to share in GPW festivities online and spread the reach of the GPW campaign. Multiple daily messages that celebrated the essential role they play in getting the world’s workforce paid were shared by global payroll professionals across Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram using the official event hashtag #GlobalPayWeek.

GPW aims to elevate the visibility of the global payroll industry. The success of GPW was made possible with support from payroll professionals and payroll providers around the globe and our official GPW sponsors, which included the following:

Be sure to save the date for the 2021 Global Payroll Week celebration, 26-30 April 2021.
