Global Payroll Week 2019: Celebration Grows Along With the Industry

By Brandy Gaskins

InsideImage_July19_GPWRecap_1The Global Payroll Management Institute (GPMI) celebrated the second annual Global Payroll Week (GPW) 29 April-3 May. The successful weeklong event was dedicated to increasing global payroll professionals’ skill level through daily education, training, and networking opportunities. The event recognized payroll professionals around the world for their efforts to pay employees accurately and on time, every time.

“Payroll drives the financial engines that make the world’s global economies work,” said Dan Maddux, President of the Global Payroll Management Institute. “GPW helps us work toward building better payroll organizations for today and the future.”

Exclusive Industry Insight

GPMI once again hosted the “Getting the World Paid” survey as a tool to gauge industry trends in the rapidly evolving global payroll landscape. Approximately 680 global payroll professionals representing more than 17 countries participated in the survey in the months leading up to GPW. Their responses revealed insights on topics such as technology, standardization, service providers, and data accuracy.

Results from the survey were revealed and discussed in-depth during a complimentary webinar presented by GPMI on the final day of GPW. More than 200 individuals tuned in to discover the findings from the survey and received expert insight from webinar presenters. If you were unable to attend the live presentation, the webinar is available on-demand until April 2020. Select results from the survey were also used to create a fun infographic for global payroll professionals to share online after attending the webinar.

Three survey participants were randomly selected to receive a virtual education voucher from GPMI as thanks for sharing their feedback. Linda Wong, CPP, Payroll Manager of Powell Electrical Systems; April Crane, Global Payroll Manager of Unitedlex; and Jeff Kidwell, Payroll Specialist for ESP Management Partners, LLC, were this year’s lucky recipients who can attend any GPMI virtual class of their choosing throughout 2019.

A Week of Education

Education is a cornerstone mission of the annual GPW event, and this year’s event focused on providing easy access to continuing payroll education. During the week, the global payroll community had the opportunity to attend five daily complimentary educational webinars hosted by GPMI and various subject matter experts and providers.

Topics for the week included:

More than 1,500 individuals cumulatively took advantage of the webinars offered throughout GPW. Participants were eligible to earn one RCH for each webinar they attended. If you were unable to attend any of the live presentations, all GPW webinars are currently available on-demand.

InsideImage_July19_GPWRecap_2Social Media Impact

Social media was an extremely popular way for the international payroll community to participate in GPW festivities online and spread the reach of the GPW campaign. Multiple daily messages were shared across Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram using the official event hashtag #GlobalPayWeek.

Across social media, GPMI conducted a #GlobalPayWeek Trivia Challenge that prompted individuals to put their global payroll and international currency knowledge to the test in the form of a fun quiz. Thirty-three professionals rose to the challenge. In recognition of their trivia mastery, Edward Ritter, Payroll Operations Manager for Lutron Electronics, and Lindsay Coughlan, CPP, Global Payroll Implementation for Comcast, each were randomly selected to win a $50 Amazon e-gift card.

In addition, a special #GlobalPaynews payroll chat was conducted on Twitter during the Thursday of GPW in partnership with Neeyamo, an official GPW Sponsor. During the hourlong online discussion, subject matter experts from Neeyamo and GPMI provided insight on the topic “Global Payroll: More Than Just Gross-to-Net.” The live online chat garnered approximately 540 tweets and 583 “favorited” tweets among the 35 participants in the chat.

Celebrations Around the World

In addition to the opportunities provided by GPMI, payroll professionals and organizations celebrated the special week internally within their organizations. For example, the Dublin Chapter of the GPMI hosted a special celebratory breakfast in recognition of the week. In addition, employees of Paycheck Plus in the United Kingdom were treated to sweet treats within the office and afternoon festivities in recognition of all the hard-working payroll professionals around the world.

In India, employees of Neeyamo participated in company-wide contests, quizzes, and cake. These are just a few examples of methods used by professionals and organizations from different regions to celebrate payroll professionals across the world.

Global Payroll Week aims to elevate the visibility of the global payroll industry and increase the global payroll professional’s skill level through education, training, and networking opportunities. The success of GPW was made possible with support from payroll professionals and payroll providers around the globe and our official GPW Sponsors.

Save the date for the 2020 Global Payroll Week celebration, 27 April-1 May.

Thank you to our 2019 Sponsors: Immedis, Neeyamo, and Workday.
